Horse racing has been around for centuries, and it remains one of the most popular sports in the world. From the roar of the crowd to the heart-stopping excitement of a close finish, horse racing provides some of the most exhilarating moments in all of sport. But what are some of the most thrilling races? We take a look at some of horse racing’s greatest moments today.
The Kentucky Derby is known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports” for good reason: The Churchill Downs stretch run is one of horse racing’s signature moments. In 2001, Monarchos became just the second horse to complete the course faster than two minutes, setting a new track record with a time of 1:59.97. As if that weren’t enough, Monarchos went on to win that year’s Triple Crown—a feat not seen since Affirmed in 1978.
The Belmont Stakes is another race that often produces thrilling finishes. The longest race in the Triple Crown series (it covers 1 ½ miles) has provided several memorable finales over its long history. In 2004, Birdstone shocked smart-money favorite Smarty Jones by coming from behind to win—the first time since 1979 that a Triple Crown sweep had been denied. Two years later, Jazil pulled off an even bigger upset when he held off favored Bernardini by ¾ length in a photo finish for the ages.
Of course, these aren’t the only thrilling races out there. The Preakness Stakes has produced plenty of dramatic finishes as well; Afleet Alex’s incredible 2005 victory comes to mind immediately! And who could forget Zenyatta’s heroics at Breeders’ Cup 2009? She put on an amazing show as she came from behind to win in her first ever try at dirt racing!
These are just a few examples among many; we could go on and on about horse racing’s greatest moments! But no matter which races you choose to highlight, there’s no denying that this sport offers some truly unforgettable experiences—and that’s why so many fans keep coming back year after year!
