The Chinese were also known for their use of Keno slips – pieces of paper that contained numbers which were drawn randomly from a container – as early as 200 BC.
In Ancient Egypt, historians have found evidence that suggest that gambling activities such as board games like Senet (similar to modern-day backgammon) were popular among Pharaohs and ordinary citizens alike. During this time, people also gambled using coins which had different values based on their weight.
Medieval Europe saw gambling become increasingly popular due to its ability to provide entertainment at no cost to players aside from their wagers. The earliest card games evolved from Tarot decks which were used by magicians for occult practices and divination rituals before they eventually became tools for recreational gaming purposes. Meanwhile, Mahjong became so popular in 15th century China that an emperor declared its practice illegal unless it was done within certain confines like private homes or clubs.
The Renaissance period saw gambling become even more widespread with betting on horse races becoming commonplace amongst noblemen throughout Europe and Asia. Furthermore, this period also gave birth to some of the first casinos where gamblers could play roulette tables along with other games such as faro and craps (the latter being derived from an old French game called “crapaud”).
